Mel Leon (she/they) is a Toronto-based actor, writer, and maker, and co-founder of Glitter Theory Media. A two-time Dora Award winner, she's spent over a decade in indie and classical theatre — including work with Shakespeare BASH'd (Two Noble Kinsmen, King Lear, Cymbeline, Othello, Measure for Measure), Dauntless City Theatre (All's Well That Ends Well, Much Ado About Nothing), Shakespeare By the Sea (As You Like It, Robin Hood, Cinderelly, Hamlet), and the multi-award-winning Bad Hats Theatre (Storybook Search).
Her move behind the camera was sparked by a desire to tell the stories she wasn't seeing on screen — queer, polyamorous, sex-positive narratives told with nuance and curiosity. Mel's creative work lives in the emotional and the gritty: the messy, muddy bits that make people extraordinary, paired with the moments of magic that don't quite make sense. That's the sweet spot she keeps returning to, whether she's developing a script, stepping into a role, or building something new for film and television.
When she's not writing or performing, Mel is usually crocheting, illustrating, or building queer community — often all three at once.
